So, what is Eco Glitter?!

Eco Glitter is not made from plastic, as most commercially available glitters are. It is made from modified regenerated cellulose and once in the natural environment microbes will consume the biodegradable content over a period of weeks and months, breaking it down in a natural, harm free way that is safer for the environment.

So, what rots?

Well, anything plastic free! In fact, we love things that rot because it means they break down naturally without leaving a negative impact on the planet.

Our plastic free glitter will shine when you need it to and then break down in warm and wet conditions, just like a leaf, apple, or any other natural material. Clean, simple, beautiful. 

Why are we committed to reducing microplastics created by plastic based glitter?

The issue with microplastics is that they can attract toxic chemicals in the environment, acting as a sponge that can concentrate these chemicals and can enter the food chain.

As traditional plastic based glitter is typically less than 5mm in size and made from plastic, it’s considered to be primary microplastic. This, combined with how glitter is used in some applications can contribute to plastic pollution in the natural environment.

Glitter is a very small part of the microplastic problem facing our environment, however it is an important step in the right direction.

Bioglitter™ is the trademark and brand name of a range of eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastic based glitter.  It has been developed and continues to be developed, to tackle the part of microplastic pollution created by glitter.

Invented and manufactured by Ronald Britton Ltd, a British company, Bioglitter™, uses natural and plant derived material as its basis rather than plastic.  It is PROVEN through ISO14851/2 freshwater testing of the whole Bioglitter product, core and coating, to quickly biodegrade into harmless substances in the natural environment.

Bioglitter™ is designed to biodegrade quickly and safely in natural freshwater environments.  Ronald Britton Ltd uses TÜV OK biodegradable WATER certification as a simple and clear means of communicating this fact to our customers.  We have taken this approach as terms such as ‘100% plastic free’ and ‘100% biodegradable’ can be used without qualification and don’t necessarily describe the eco credentials of a product.

At Ronald Britton, we believe OK biodegradable WATER certification cuts through the confusion.  Moreover, the ISO 14851/2 tests at the heart of this certification are also specified by ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) for determination of whether or not a polymeric material is considered a microplastic.
